Coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the impeachment proceedings of former US President Bill Clinton, Instinct Productions produced a comprehensive six-part documentary series, The Clinton Affair, with Academy Award® and Emmy®-winning producer Alex Gibney and Emmy®-winning director Blair Foster. Weaving together never-before-seen archival footage with exclusive new interviews, the series examines the biggest political scandal of a generation and its lasting influence and reverberations on the country. Exploring broader topics including media, feminism, politics and power, the documentary investigates the history leading up to the impeachment trial and chronicles the role each of these forces played in this story of sex, power, money, lies and ideological warfare.

First broadcast on A+E on 18th November 2019, the series traces the twisted, intertwined series of events that led to the impeachment trial that set the nation on the path towards a more staunchly partisan political system. It also features arresting archival footage as well as comprehensive interviews with the people closest to the events including a timely, in-depth reflection on the topic with Monica Lewinsky.

However, when I began this project I quickly realized much of what I thought I knew was incomplete, or worse, inaccurate,” comments series director Blair Foster. “My goal for this series was to do a deep dive into the facts and speak to as many people as possible who were involved. The deeper I got the clearer it became that this series is as much about the present day as it is about the 1990’s. To borrow a phrase from Barbara Tuchman, this series serves as a ‘distant mirror’ on our current political situation and is far more timely than I ever anticipated.”

The Clinton Affair features a full range of interviews from key players and observers who were intimately involved in this long standing political drama.

It was produced for A&E Network by Jigsaw Productions and Instinct Productions. Alex Gibney, Blair Foster and Stacey Offman served as executive producers for Jigsaw Productions. Jemima Khan and Henrietta Conrad served as executive producers for Instinct Productions.

The Clinton Affair won Best History and Biography Show at the 2019 Banff World Media Festival Rockie Awards.
